Sveinstindur is one of the most spectacular viewpoint hikes in Iceland’s Central Highlands. Rising above Langisjór lake, this summit offers sweeping panoramic views across one of the country’s most untouched landscapes. On a clear day, you can see both Vatnajökull to the northeast and Mýrdalsjökull to the southwest, a rare and unforgettable sight.
Sveinstindur is very remote and only accessible in summer, and since it is located in the highlands, you will need a 4x4 to get here (use https://umferdin.is/en to check current road conditions!) Access is via F208 and then F235 towards Langisjór and all the way to the small parking area (not the information center, it's the next one), which is the starting point for the trail. There are also multiple river crossings along the way!
The trail is marked with yellow posts and is relatively short but steep in sections, with soft, crumbly terrain that can make footing tricky.
About halfway up, you'll begin to see why this is one of the most unforgettable hikes in Iceland.
This hike is about 2.6 miles round-trip, 1700ft of elevation gain, and takes around 2-3 hours! :)
