Seljalandsfoss is a unique waterfall you can walk behind, so the most important things are gear and timing, wear sturdy, grippy shoes and a waterproof outer layer because the path is wet and slippery and you will get soaked from the spray, and bring a rain cover for cameras or your phone. The site has a small paid parking area and basic toilets, and it fills with tour buses, so aim for early morning or late evening if you want fewer people. If you’re here during the midnight sun going in the middle of the night isn’t a bad idea! Give yourself 30 to 60 minutes to see the main viewpoint and the nearby hidden waterfall Gljúfrabúi, and be prepared that the behind-the-water path is muddy and not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs since you will need to climb up a set of stairs to get behind the waterfall.
We made the mistake of not wearing waterproof gear and our clothes were soaked and the water is freezing, so please make sure you are wearing the proper attire! We definitely underestimated the power of these waterfalls!!
