Kvernufoss is a fantastic little waterfall tucked just a short distance from Skógafoss on Iceland’s South Coast, and it’s one of our favorite lesser-visited stops. Because it sits inside a small gorge and doesn’t have the big parking lot of its famous neighbor, it's often much quieter, which makes it a great addition to your itinerary if you want the beauty of a waterfall without the crowds.
Getting to Kvernufoss is very easy from the Kvernufoss parking lot. The hike is short and mostly flat with only a little climbing, and it takes about 10–15 minutes each way depending on your pace.
Once you reach the gorge, you’ll see the water coming down a mossy cliff into a shallow pool below. One of the coolest parts of Kvernufoss is that there’s a path that wraps around behind the waterfall, so you can walk behind the waterfall for a different perspective. You will definitely get wet on your way behind Kvernufoss, so make sure to wear waterproof gear!
*On the trail you will have to climb a ladder over a fence, but you are not trespassing, so don't worry!
