If you’re looking to experience Vatnajökull up close, we highly recommend booking a glacier walk with Icelandic Mountain Guides. This four hour tour takes you farther out onto the ice than many standard glacier hikes, giving you a more immersive experience on Europe’s largest glacier.

You’ll meet your certified guide in Skaftafell, get fitted with crampons and an ice axe, and then head out onto the glacier to explore the incredible ice formations up close. The mix of deep blue ice, white ridges, and ash-covered sections makes this a really unique and memorable experience.
