You simply cannot miss Hutt Lagoon. It’s one of the most beautiful pink lakes we’ve seen in Australia and easily one of our favourites, especially for capturing drone footage. This dreamlike lake is famous for its vibrant pink colour, caused by the presence of a specific type of algae.

There are plenty of pullover bays along the edge of the lake where you can stop, take in the views, and snap some photos, or you can head to the main viewpoint. Hutt Lagoon is quite expansive, with salt farms scattered throughout that add a stunning mix of colours and textures.

Just a heads up if you’re thinking of getting in the water as it’s super salty and has a pretty strong smell. Some people do swim in it, but we’ll leave that up to you.

The colour of the lake can be unpredictable throughout the year, but no matter when you visit, you’re sure to catch a spectacular view. In summer, the lake can dry out a little more, but you’ll still see gorgeous salt crystallisation and plenty of pink tones. We’ve visited a few times and while it looks different every trip, it’s always beautiful.

You can shoot at Hutt Lagoon any time of day, but we recommend going in the morning or late afternoon for the best lighting. We’ve also found it’s best to visit on a sunny day as overcast skies can cast dull reflections over the water and take away from the lake’s vibrant pink hue.
