If you want somewhere that feels completely removed from the business of Queenstown but still close enough to explore everything, Moke Lake is such a good base. You’re tucked away in the mountains, but you can easily head into Queenstown or out toward Glenorchy during the day.

This spot is seriously stunning. You’re surrounded by mountains in every direction, with the calmest, mirror-like lake right in front of you. There are sheep everywhere, just casually grazing around camp, which makes it feel even more like you’ve stumbled into something special.

One of the best parts is the loop walk around the lake. It’s easy, super scenic, and perfect with kids. You can take it slow, stop along the way, and just soak it all in. It’s one of those simple walks that ends up being a highlight.

It’s also the kind of place where you can do as much or as little as you want, go for a paddle, explore during the day, then come back and just hang by the water and watch the light change over the mountains.
