Hōkan-ji is best known for its five-story pagoda, often called Yasaka Pagoda, which stands in the middle of the Higashiyama district. It’s one of the most photographed views in Kyoto, especially from the Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka streets. The pagoda dates back centuries and has been rebuilt multiple times after fires. I found it more interesting from the outside than inside, as the surrounding traditional streets create the real atmosphere. Early morning is the best time if you want it without crowds.
