Funningur is a tiny, peaceful village with a big history. It’s believed to be where the first Viking settlers arrived in the Faroe Islands, and today it sits at the base of Slættaratindur, the country’s highest mountain.

You’ll find classic turf-roofed houses, a small wooden church from 1847 right by the water, and beautiful fjord views in every direction — it’s such a good photography stop.

If you have a little extra time, do the short hike up to the Hvíthamar viewpoint from the nearby mountain pass. It’s about 15 minutes, a bit steep, and totally worth it for the panoramic view over the fjord.
