Stútur Crater is a beautiful volcanic crater in Iceland’s highlands near Landmannalaugar.
The crater sits just off F208, so a high-clearance 4×4 is required, and this is a summer-only stop when the roads are open (use https://umferdin.is/en to check current road conditions). There are a few informal pull-off spots nearby where people usually park before walking over.
*The F208 North route has no river crossings, while F225 has multiple small river crossings!
For photos, you can hike just a few minutes up to the crater rim and from the top, you get amazing views over lava fields and Frostastaðavatn lake. This is also a great spot for aerial photography!
If you’re exploring Landmannalaugar or driving through the highlands, Stútur is an easy stop that's well worth adding to your itinerary.
