Landmannalaugar is a beautiful region full of colorful mountains, lava fields, and hot springs. If you're a hiker, Landmannalaugar is one of the best spots to go in Iceland! Here are the top trails:
Laugavegur Trail (multi-day hike)
Blahnukur
Brennisteinsalda Loop
Laugahraun Lava Field
If you plan to drive here during the peak summer season (typically June 20 through September 14 between 9 AM and 4 PM), advance parking reservations are required, so be sure to book ahead!
Getting to Landmannalaugar does require some planning. The final stretch of the drive is on F-roads, which means a proper 4x4 is required, and as always, access is limited to the summer months. Always check road conditions before heading out, as highland weather and road status can change quickly (use https://umferdin.is/en to check current road conditions).
Just before reaching the main parking area, there is a river crossing that can be tricky depending on water levels. Not all rental companies cover river damage, and not every 4x4 is suitable for deeper crossings, so use caution. If you’d rather skip the crossing, there is a parking area before the river where you can park and use the pedestrian bridge to walk into Landmannalaugar.
If you do not feel comfortable driving F-Roads, some tours will take you here :)
