At 22.5km in length, Maligne Lake is the longest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies. Lying in a glacier-carved valley, it is surrounded by huge peaks. The highest mountains are at the southern end.

The water colour changes as you travel south as well, becoming more turquoise thanks to the presence of rock flour from the glaciers.

Maligne Lake is best known for Spirit Island, which sits just over half-way down the lake. Though technically a peninsula, this tiny forested island provides the focus of one of Canada's most magnificent, and iconic, views. It is also a place of great spiritual significance for local Indigenous people.

Spirit Island is only reachable by water. There are two ways to visit - by boat tour (Maligne Lake Cruises) or via canoe/kayak. More info about both of these options elsewhere in this travel guide.

A Parks Canada parks pass is required to explore Jasper National Park.
