The Walchensee is a one of the most popular lakes in Bavaria located in the picturesque Bavarian Alps. Situated between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald, it provides visitors with stunning views along its peaceful and natural shore. Windsurfing, sailing, kite surfing and diving are some of the popular activities that visitors can enjoy in this beautiful lake, as motorised vehicles are not permitted on the water. The Herzogstandbahn cable car, which ascends from the shores of the Walchensee to 1600 metres in altitude, is also popular for sightseers and hikers in the summer months. Not only does the lift provide spectacular panoramic views of both the Kochelsee (Kochel Lake) and Walchensee, but it’s an easy way to access the breathtaking surrounding Bavarian Alps.
