Why Visit Geysir?

• This is the original Geysir, the hot spring that gave its name to all geysers in the world

• Although the Great Geysir itself is mostly dormant today, the nearby Strokkur geyser is highly active and erupts every 7 to 10 minutes, sending boiling water up to 65 feet (20 meters) into the air

• The area is full of bubbling mud pots, steaming vents, and colorful mineral deposits that create a dramatic and otherworldly landscape

• You will truly feel like you have stepped onto another planet

What to Do When You Visit

• Watch Strokkur erupt multiple times – it’s one of the most reliable geysers in the world

• Take a short scenic hike up the hill behind the area for a panoramic view of the geothermal field and the surrounding valley. It’s a lesser-known activity but absolutely worth doing for the view

• Explore the paths through the geothermal field, which are easy to walk and bring you close to boiling springs and vents

Good to Know

• There is a parking fee of 1000 ISK per car, paid at the machines near the main lot

• Public restrooms, cafés, and souvenir shops are available in the nearby Geysir Center

• It can get windy and steamy, so pack layers and waterproof gear, especially if you want to get close to Strokkur

• Best visited in daylight hours year-round, but during summer you can enjoy it late into the evening thanks to the midnight sun
