Smoking fumaroles, colorful lava fields, and aquamarine hot springs - that's Leirhnjúkur. Although the system hasn't erupted since 1984, the area still exudes an otherworldly vibe that will make you feel like you've landed on Mars.

Notes : Much less busy than Hverir area, but requires a short hike, approx 15+ min each way.

  • if you don't have much time, can be skipped and only visit Hverir instead
