The canyon of Aradena is the deepest one in the region of Chania and one of the steepest ones in Crete. You might spot the majestic Cretan vulture (gypaetus barbatus), the largest bird in Europe with a wingspan of 2,77m, flying over the sharp rocky tops soaring above you.
Crossing the Aradena canyon (a 1 hour and 30 mins hike approximately) will take you to the wonderful pebble beach of Marmara, surrounded by sea caves where you can swim into. There’s a pretty little taverna right on top of the beach.
Look behind you at the mountains and you will see Crete’s highest mountain, the “Lefka Ori” (meaning White Mountains). If you think Crete is only about the sea and the beaches, you should see this mountain in wintertime. It’s called White Mountains for a reason!
