Cape Pillar is one of the main highlights of the Three Capes Track.
You’ll walk for hours through the forest and boardwalk, which is a whole experience in itself.
Then the whole landscape opens up to these epic views of the towering sea cliffs, roaring swell, and Tasman Island just offshore!
“The Blade” is also nearby, an epic rock formation that offers even better views.
But it’s a 29 km (10-12 hours) hike from Fortescue Bay. So we did what most people do, which is:
Hike from Fortescue Bay to Bare Knoll (free campsite), which is ~9km (3-4 hours) and stay there overnight.
Next day hike to Cape Pillar and back to Bare Knoll (~20km, 7 hours)
The track is well-kept and the views are some of the best on the whole peninsula! If you're in for a challenging but rewarding hike, you’ll love it.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Mostly gentle gradient with a few short climbs
Long sections of boardwalk and exposed headlands
Minimal signage once you leave the main track
Windy at the cape, pack a jacket
The Blade is short but steep with big drops
TO ACCESS
Park pass required, book camping if you want to stay in Fortescue Bay, but no camping fees at Bare Knoll (it’s free)
All food, water management, and gear must be carried
