This is one of the BEST places we’ve ever camped in all of Australia, and it’s crazy to think it’s 100% free! You just need the Park Pass.
The campsites are a few steps away from the beach, with the iconic orange rocks and crystal clear water. It’s a truly special place.
The snorkelling and fishing were epic too! You’ll want to spend a couple of days there at least.
Keep in mind that the last place to stock up before Bay of Fires is St Helens. It’s a small town where all markets are closed after 7pm, so take that into account when planning your visit.
HOW LONG TO STAY?
3–5 nights if you can, we think the more the better! It’s the kind of place you’ll want to slow down and stay a while.
GETTING THERE & MOVING AROUND
From St Helens: 10-40 mins depending where you camp.
From Devonport (ferry terminal): ~4 hours via Derby
From Hobart: ~3.5 hours via Bicheno
Getting around: You need your own vehicle. 2WD access is fine for most campgrounds.
TRAVELLING WITH DOGS
The Bay of Fires Conservation Area isn’t pet-friendly, dogs are not allowed. But the coast from The Gardens down to Bilabong Bay has several dog-friendly areas (according to this map of the council).
ACCOMMODATION
Stay at one of the free camps right on the beach! There are 8 campsites, dogs on lead are allowed in all of them except Jeanneret Beach.
Check the facilities available in each campsite here (official website).
