Launceston is one of Tassie’s main towns. It’s smaller than Hobart but still feels like a city, just with more of a country-town vibe.
We liked it, although it’s not a big destination in itself (in our opinion). It has a big airport, perfect if you want to travel the north coast without driving all the way to Hobart and back.
If you’re there, here are some cool things to do:
Cataract Gorge. Right next to the city, epic spot for swimming, chilling, and having a nice day out.
Tamar Valley. Tassie’s biggest wine region, with vineyards stretching along the river north of town.
HOW LONG TO STAY?
1-2 nights is plenty, we think. Stay more if you want to explore Tamar Valley.
GETTING THERE & MOVING AROUND
Fly: Launceston has its own airport with regular flights from most cities.
Getting around: There’s good public transport in town, but you’ll need a car if you want to head out to spots like Tamar Valley.
TRAVELLING WITH DOGS
It’s a very dog-friendly town! Here’s a guide with tips, trails, cafés, etc.
ACCOMMODATION
Most people stay in the city centre for easy access to everything. Here are some solid options:
BIG4 Launceston Holiday Park, a good pick if you’re camping or want a cabin. It’s family-friendly and you’ll have space to spread out.
Peppers Silo Hotel is the luxury option. It’s literally built inside old grain silos! And the river views look top-notch.
The Dragonfly Inn is a quirky B&B with a bit of character, perfect for the Gilmore Girls fans out there.
