This is one of our favourite places in Tassie. We spent a week here and honestly could’ve stayed longer!

Just take your car across on the ferry and explore the island from there.

It has some of the best campsites in all of Tasmania, the beaches and the hikes are absolutely epic, and there’s wildlife everywhere!

The only service station in the island is in Adventure Bay general store, though. It’s pricey, so bring a full tank.

There’s heapsss to do, including:

  • The iconic Truganini Lookout (The Neck)

  • Fluted Cape Walk

  • Drive-through oysters at Get Shucked

  • Camp and surf at Cloudy Bay

  • See the aurora australis

  • Visit the lighthouse at the southern tip

  • Pick up bread and local produce from honesty boxes

HOW LONG TO STAY?
We recommend 3-5 nights. Bruny Island begs to be explored at your own pace, it’s such a unique place!

Some people visit as a day trip from Hobart. That’s good enough if you’re tight on time but honestly try staying there at least 1 night, especially if it’s aurora season (winter).

GETTING THERE & MOVING AROUND

  • Ferry: Departs from Kettering (~40 mins south of Hobart). Ferry runs every 20 mins, 6:00 AM–7:00 PM. The ride takes 15-20 mins.

  • Getting around: You need a car to move around, there’s no public transport on the island. Most of the island has sealed roads but the southern part doesn’t. There are some gravel roads but most are 2WD-friendly.

Note: There are some areas in South Bruny that require a 4WD (like Cloudy Corner campsite), keep that in mind when planning your stay.

TRAVELLING WITH DOGS
Dogs are allowed on the ferry and in some areas of the island, but most of South Bruny is a national park where pets are not allowed.

There are some private accommodations and campsites that allow dogs, though!

ACCOMMODATION

We recommend camping. There are heapsss of options, but our favourite is Cloudy Bay! It’s absolutely magical. There's also a campsite in Truganini Lookout.

But if you’re looking for more hotel-like stays, check Alonnah, Lunawanna, and Adventure Beach. The latter is the main hub, with a general store and the only petrol station on the island.

  • Best campsite: Cloudy Bay. Remote, beachfront, and 4WD accessible. No bookings, first-come, first-served.

  • Holiday Park & Dog-friendly: Captain Cook Holiday Park. Great location in Adventure Bay, with caravan sites, cabins, and villas. Pet-friendly options available.

  • Best for a romantic getaway: Luxury yurt glamping at Littlegrove. It’s a unique stay perfect for couples wanting to stay somewhere truly special.
