Tasmania’s capital is most likely where you’ll kick off your trip!
If you’re doing a short visit to Tassie (5-7 days), it’s one of the best places to stay put and explore from.
There’s heaps to do in town (MONA, Salamanca Markets, the botanical gardens…) and there are several iconic day trips nearby:
Mount Wellington
Mount Field National Park
Bruny Island
Port Arthur
Three Capes Track
Coal River Valley
Plus there are outdoor shops pretty much everywhere, so don’t worry if you forgot something, you can easily get it here.
HOW LONG TO STAY?
3-4 nights is a solid amount, enough to explore the city and fit in a few epic day trips.
GETTING THERE & MOVING AROUND
Fly: Hobart has the main airport in Tassie. Direct flights from Melbourne take ~1 hr.
From Devonport: About a 3-3.h hr drive from the ferry terminal.
Getting around: There’s good public transport in the city but you’ll need a car if you’re going outside the city limits.
TRAVELLING WITH DOGS
The Hobart City website has done a great job of listing dog-friendly parks, here’s all the info.
