The Fossil Cliffs are a stretch of high limestone cliffs lined with shell fossils from millions of years ago. They’re on Maria Island.
At first you’re like “what’s so special about these cliffs” until you really pay attention and start seeing all the fossils! It’s insane.
There’s also heaps of wombats around, being adorable while chomping on the grass.
You can walk or cycle to the area from Darlington.
The full loop is 4.5km long and takes 2 hours, it includes open grasslands with views across to Freycinet and Schouten Island on a good day.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Fossils embedded in the cliff walls
Open coastal views and quiet walking tracks
Wildlife often grazing near the route
Optional loop trail or direct return path
No shade or water, bring sun protection
TO ACCESS
Free to access but Maria Island requires a parks pass
Also accessible by bike from the settlement
No shops or services on the island, bring all gear with you
Ferry to Maria Island departs from Triabunna and there’s also a shuttle from Hobart. More info here
There are also full-day tours from Hobart and back.
They’re pricier than just getting the shuttle. But you’re paying to travel comfortably plus to be with a tour guide that shows you around the island and tells you all about it.
This can be a massive pro for some people (especially if you can’t stay overnight). Here’s an epic one if you’re keen!
