Bicheno was one of our favourite towns in Tassie! It’s very small but packs a punch.
We stayed near Redbill Beach (great surfing) and loved how easy it was to access everything by foot.
There’s a small island offshore you can walk to at low tide, too - Diamond Island. Just make sure you’re back before the tide comes in, unless you want to swim back (we nearly did, not recommended LOL).
Plus you can see penguins! They go to the ocean early in the morning and come back to their nests at night. Absolutely adorable.
There’s also a cool blowhole and a nice community garden! Plus the general beach vibes. We loved it.
HOW LONG TO STAY?
1-2 nights is enough for a beach break, see the penguins, and a bit of exploring.
GETTING THERE & MOVING AROUND
From Hobart: ~2.5hr drive.
From Devonport (ferry terminal): ~3 hrs
Getting around: Everything in town is walkable. You’ll want a car to get here and explore nearby spots, though.
TRAVELLING WITH DOGS
Some areas are dog-friendly 24/7, others have restrictions, and others are not (like Diamond Island or when it’s a risk for the penguins). This PDF has a detailed map of the zones.
ACCOMMODATION
Stay near Diamond Island or town centre so you’re within walking distance to the beach and penguins.
Diamond Island Resort. Best stay in our opinion. Epic location with access to Diamond Island, penguin tour included for customers, family-friendly and pets allowed.
Bicheno East Coast Holiday Park. Best for campers and mid-range budget. It’s in the heart of town, an IGA across the street, and great beach access.
Bicheno Backpackers Hostel. Budget-friendly option close to food and the beach.
