This is a FREE museum in the centre of Hobart, just a few minutes’ walk from the waterfront.

It covers everything from Tasmania’s convict history to Aboriginal culture, Antarctic exploration, and local wildlife.

It’s a mid-sized museum, so you can see most of it in 1 to 2 hours. There are permanent displays plus rotating exhibitions, and it’s a solid indoor option for rainy days.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Well-curated exhibits across a mix of themes

  • Occasional temporary exhibitions or installations

  • A few interactive and kid-friendly areas

  • Café next door for a post-museum break

  • Can get busy during school holidays

TO ACCESS

  • Free entry

  • Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 4 PM, closed Mondays (last time we checked)

  • Located on Dunn Place, near the Hobart waterfront

  • Easy walk from Salamanca or the city centre
