You can absolutely see penguins in Bicheno for free, just head out to Redbill Beach or even the blowhole at night and you might spot them waddling up to their burrows.

But if you want to guarantee a sighting, it’s worth joining a tour!

The guides know exactly where the penguins come in each night and take you straight to the best viewing spots. You’ll also learn a lot about the birds, the coastline, and the area in general, it’s a fun and easy night out.

And if you’re staying at Diamond Island Resort, they actually offer free penguin tours to their guests! The resort is near Redbill Beach, which is one of the main nesting areas.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Tours depart nightly, book in advance during peak times

  • Guides will help spot the penguins and explain their behaviour

  • Great for families, couples, or solo travellers

  • No cameras with flash, it disturbs the penguins

  • Tours run for around 1 hour
