Port Arthur is one of the most important historic sites in Australia.

It was a penal settlement in the 1800s and is now a huge open-air museum with ruins, gardens, and restored buildings.

Sadly, it’s also where the 1996 massacre took place, which led to major gun law reform in Australia. Today it is a place of remembrance of the people that lost their lives and can be accessed as a museum.

We spent around half a day walking around, it’s a really big place with heaps to see.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Restored and ruined buildings spread over a large area

  • Entry includes a self-guided tour and a harbour cruise

  • Optional add-ons like ghost tours or access to the Isle of the Dead

  • Signs and exhibits explaining daily life and convict stories

  • Café and visitor centre on site with maps and facilities

TO ACCESS

  • Approx 1.5 hr drive from Hobart

  • Open daily from 9AM to 5PM (last time we checked)

  • Large carpark, sealed road access

  • Tickets available online or at the visitor centre
