The Painted Cliffs were one of the highlights of our stay in Maria Island.
The cliffs are made of wind-carved sandstone with spectacular honeycomb patterns, but they’re only accessible at low tide.
The textures and colours are wild up close, and they’re lined with rock pools and an epic kelp forest that’s great for snorkelling!

Ferry to Maria Island departs from Triabunna and there’s also a shuttle from Hobart. More info here
There are also full-day tours from Hobart and back.
They’re pricier than just getting the shuttle. But you’re paying to travel comfortably plus to be with a tour guide that shows you around the island and tells you all about it.
This can be a massive pro for some people (especially if you can’t stay overnight). Here’s an epic one if you’re keen!
