Surf beach in Bicheno with views of Diamond Island

Beach

This is Bicheno’s main surf beach, a 1 km stretch of sand with good, consistent waves and views to Diamond Island.

It’s popular with locals and travellers, but rarely feels crowded! We loved it.

It’s a penguin nesting area, too. At night, you might spot fairy penguins waddling up the beach if you’re lucky (just keep your distance and NEVER use flash).

And during the day, you can walk across the sandbar to Diamond Island, but only at low tide.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • Clean, quiet, and popular with locals

  • No pets allowed most of the day, more info here

TO ACCESS

  • Right in Bicheno, short walk or drive from town centre

  • Free, no fees or permits needed

  • Parking available at either end of the beach

  • No facilities directly on the beach
