La Arena is a small town located near Chitré, in the Azuero Peninsula of Panama. It is famous for its pottery, where vendors from all around the area come to show local artistry. The intricate designs often mimic those used by pre-Colombian indigenous groups of the area, including the Ngöbe-Buglé. The pieces, which range from mugs and ashtrays to tinajas (pots) that were once used for water storage, are made by hand using a foot-powered potter’s wheel.
