La Arena is a small town located near Chitré, in the Azuero Peninsula of Panama. It is famous for its pottery, where vendors from all around the area come to show local artistry. The intricate designs often mimic those used by pre-Colombian indigenous groups of the area, including the Ngöbe-Buglé. The pieces, which range from mugs and ashtrays to tinajas (pots) that were once used for water storage, are made by hand using a foot-powered potter’s wheel. La Arena's panaderias, or bread stores, also provide delicious pastries, breads and cookies that are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. With friendly shop owners proudly displaying their wares and an eye-catching variety of artwork, La Arena can make for an enjoyable day trip or stop along the way.
