Sighișoara is one of those places that feels like stepping into a fairytale. With its colorful houses, cobbled streets, medieval towers, and perfectly preserved citadel, it's easily one of my favorite towns in Romania. It's also one of the few inhabited medieval citadels in Europe, giving it a unique charm that you won't find in many other places.
I recommend taking your time here rather than rushing through. Wander the narrow streets, admire the historic buildings, climb the famous Clock Tower for panoramic views, and don't miss the iconic Covered Staircase leading to the Church on the Hill. Every corner feels photogenic, making it a paradise for anyone who enjoys photography or simply exploring beautiful places.
Although Sighișoara isn't a large city, that's exactly what makes it special. You can explore most of the old town in just a few hours, but it's also a wonderful place to stay overnight. Once the day-trippers leave, the citadel becomes much quieter, and the atmosphere is even more magical.
My Tips
Visit early in the morning or later in the evening to enjoy the citadel with fewer crowds.
Wear comfortable shoes—the streets are steep and covered with cobblestones.
Climb the Clock Tower for one of the best panoramic views over the colorful rooftops.
Stay at least one night if you can. Sighișoara has a completely different atmosphere after sunset.
If you're driving, park outside the citadel and explore the old town on foot, as vehicle access inside is limited.
If you're visiting Transylvania, Sighișoara pairs perfectly with Brașov, Sibiu, and Mediaș on the same road trip.
