Alba Iulia
Historic
Directions

At the heart of the city lies the impressive Alba Carolina Citadel, one of the largest and best-preserved Vauban fortresses in Europe. With its massive walls, wide promenades, and beautifully restored buildings, it's a place where history and relaxation go hand in hand.

What I enjoy most about Alba Iulia is how easy it is to explore on foot. You can spend hours wandering through the citadel, discovering historic gates, churches, museums, hidden courtyards, and lively squares. The atmosphere is peaceful, making it a great place to slow down, take photos, or simply enjoy a coffee while surrounded by centuries of history.

Beyond its beautiful architecture, Alba Iulia holds a special place in Romanian history. It was here, on December 1, 1918, that the Great Union of Romania was proclaimed, making the city one of the country's most important historical landmarks.

✨ Tips

  • Plan to spend at least half a day, although a full day will allow you to explore the citadel at a relaxed pace.

  • Don't miss the Changing of the Guard ceremony, held daily during the warmer months—it's one of the city's most popular attractions.

  • Climb the citadel walls for beautiful panoramic views and a different perspective of the fortress.

  • Visit the Coronation Cathedral, Union Hall (Sala Unirii), and St. Michael's Cathedral, one of the oldest and most important churches in Transylvania.

  • The citadel is especially beautiful in the evening when it's illuminated, so consider staying until sunset.

  • There are several parking areas around the fortress, making it easy to visit if you're traveling by car.
