Day 1: Karlstad Nature & Play

Morning: Mariebergsskogen

Start the weekend at Karlstad's favourite family park. Kids can run free in the huge playgrounds, visit the animals in Lillskogen and explore the park's walking paths. The park is free to enter and works well in almost any weather.

Don't miss the free Naturum Värmland, where children can learn about local wildlife through interactive exhibits. It's perfect if rain showers roll through or you need a break from the playground.

Picnic tip: There are plenty of grassy areas throughout the park.

Lunch option: The café inside Naturum serves light lunches, grilled sandwiches and pancakes that are popular with kids.

Afternoon: Alsters Herrgård - Gustaf Frödings minnesgård

Skip the paid manor house and enjoy the beautiful grounds instead. The open lawns are ideal for children who need space to run around, and there are easy walking paths suitable for younger kids. The free Lekskog (forest playground) adds an extra adventure element.

The grounds offer a relaxed countryside feel without requiring a long hike.

Best for: Toddlers and younger children who enjoy exploring at their own pace.

Picnic spot: The lawns around the manor are perfect for a family picnic.

Grill option: There is a grill area on the grounds, making it easy to cook lunch or an early dinner outdoors.

Optional detour: Nearby Alsters Strandbad has a grill area and a shallow beach that is great for children in summer.

Evening: Zakrisdalsudden

Finish the day at one of Karlstad's most underrated lakeside areas. Zakrisdalsudden sits right on Vänern with west-facing views, making it a fantastic place to watch the sunset. The shoreline, small beaches, rocks and open water give kids plenty to explore while parents can enjoy the evening light over the lake. The area is known for its waterfront location and easy access to nature and walking paths.

Why it's great with kids:

  • Short and easy walks

  • Rocks, shoreline and nature to explore

  • Space to throw stones into Vänern

  • Beautiful evening light without a long hike

Best time to visit: About 1–2 hours before sunset so kids have time to play before settling down for snacks and views over the water. During summer, sunset can be very late, often around 22:00.

Picnic tip: Pack an early dinner or evening fika and enjoy it by the lakeshore. This is one of the most peaceful sunset spots close to central Karlstad.

Day 2: Hammarö Outdoor Adventure

Morning: Kilenegården

Kilenegården is one of the best family outdoor destinations in the region. There are stroller-friendly trails, a large playground, open green spaces and short walking loops that work for all ages.

If you're visiting during colder months, this is still a great stop thanks to the sheltered grill huts and year-round facilities.

Why kids love it: Playgrounds, forest trails, wildlife spotting and lots of room to explore.

Lunch recommendation: Bring food and use one of the many grill huts. Firewood is usually provided, making this one of the easiest family grilling spots around Karlstad.

Early Afternoon: Lillängshamnen

After Kilenegården, head to the harbour area for a slower-paced afternoon. Kids enjoy watching the boats come and go, feeding their curiosity about life on the water and exploring the shoreline.

This stop works especially well if younger children need a calmer activity after an active morning.

Picnic spot: Benches and waterfront areas provide lovely views over the harbour.

Food option: Families wanting a meal out can stop at Lillängshamnens Fiskrökeri, Restaurang & Butik.

Late Afternoon & Sunset: Hammarö Sydspets

Finish the weekend at one of the most beautiful natural areas on Lake Vänern. The short walk to the shoreline feels like a mini adventure for kids, and the views are spectacular.

The area is especially magical in the evening when the sun begins to set over Vänern.

Why families love it:

  • Dramatic lake views

  • Easy nature experience

  • Space to throw stones and explore the shoreline

  • Great wildlife and birdwatching opportunities

Best picnic of the weekend: Bring dinner and enjoy it by the water.

Grilling: There are designated outdoor fire and grilling areas in the nature reserve, making this an excellent sunset barbecue stop.

Rainy Day Plan

If the weather turns wet, spend extra time at:

  1. Mariebergsskogen (Naturum and indoor exhibits)

  2. Alsters Herrgård - Gustaf Frödings minnesgård (short walks between showers)

  3. Kilenegården (grill huts and sheltered areas)

These locations offer the best mix of outdoor play and weather protection.
