The emblematic town of Anogia (Ανώγεια in Greek), deriving from “Ano” and “gi” which means the “Upper Land”.

It’s one of the most traditional settlements in Crete, at an altitude of 830m on the foothills of Mt Psiloritis (also called Ida). Anogia has got a tradition in livestock farming–they say that the livestock on Mt Psiloritis account for more than 80,000.

If you’re looking for the perfect “antikristo” lamb, this is where you will find it. Also, Anogia is the birthplace of the great Cretan musician Nikos Xilouris. You will find his home in a pretty square in Anogia.

Tip: try the “galaktoboureko” sweet while in that square! It’s simply mouthwatering.
