Built around numerous monuments of the Minoan Civilization, Ano Zakros is located in the southeastern part of Lasithi and is separated by a gorge from the seaside Kato Zakros (it’s basically two different towns).

This Gorge is called the Gorge of the Dead. Don’t worry, there is nothing to be afraid of: it was named this way by the Minoans since they placed the tombs of the dead in the holes that can be found inside the caves left and right. I absolutely recommend hiking the gorge and getting to Kato Zakros on foot.

Zakros used to be one of the 4 administrative centres of the Minoan civilization and many remnants of their reign can be found in the area.
