The Jungfraujoch is one the most popular tourist destinations in Switzerland. From Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, a mountain railway brings you to the highest rail station in Europe at 3,454m (11,332 ft).

From the indoor and outdoor observation decks at the top, you can enjoy views of the immense Aletsch glacier, the longest in the alps, over 20 km long.

As part of your visit, you can walk through the "Ice Palace," a services of tunnels cut through the glacier ice. You can also walk directly on the glacier snow, a great place to snap pics with the famous peaks. There is multimedia tour of the history of this place, restaurants, and gift shops.

From late May to mid October, you can visit the "Snow Fun Park" which has sledding, a small ski hill, and a zipline. You can rent the equipment on-site.

You can also hike on a groomed snowy trail to the Mönchjoch hut, about 45 mins each way. You could each lunch there and even stay overnight, reservations a must. The hut is open from late March through October. See website to book a spot.

How to get there

The best way to reach the Jungfraujoch is via the Eiger Express cable car from the Grindelwald Terminal train station. Parking garage at Grundstrasse 54, 3818 Grindelwald.

This outing is best done while staying in the Interlaken or Jungfrau Region area. But it can be done as a day trip from Zurich or Lucerne. Book a guided tour.

Is it worth it?

This is an expensive outing, at about CHF 210/person depending on when you visit. You can get a significant discount with the Swiss Travel Pass, Jungfrau Travel Pass, Bernese Oberland Regional Pass, and SBB Half-fare Card.

It's absolutely spectacular and all our visitors have really enjoyed it. But I find most travelers are better off spending their budget on other mountains activity in the Jungfrau Region, which are much less expensive and still very beautiful.
