Bica da Cana isn’t just a viewpoint – it’s one of those places on Madeira’s west side that makes you stop and say wow. Perched high in the mountains, it gives you stunning views over rolling hills, dramatic cliffs, and, if you’re lucky, a blanket of clouds drifting by.
It’s a favourite with both locals and travellers, not only for the views but also because it’s a designated camping and BBQ area. Picture waking up here: fresh mountain air, coffee in hand, and nothing but nature all around.
The area is wrapped in greenery with well-marked hiking trails, so it’s easy to mix a visit with a scenic walk. Whether you’re here for a picnic, a hike, or a night under the stars, Bica da Cana is pure Madeira magic.
A quick note about camping here
Wild camping is a no-go anywhere on Madeira, and Bica da Cana is no exception. If you want to stay the night, you’ll need a free camping license from the IFCN (Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza). It’s easy to request online, but make sure you arrange it in advance so you can relax without worrying about a fine.
If you’re in a campervan, keep in mind that different rules usually apply – but not inside official camping areas like this one. In other words: still get that permit, unless you park on the road.

PR17 – Caminho do Pináculo e Folhadal
Caminho do Pináculo e Folhadal is a challenging 15 km hiking route with an expected duration of 6.5 hours. The trail crosses a well-preserved natural area, both in altitude - the highest point of the path is 1490 meters - and the Laurissilva forest.
The hike starts at the regional road ER 105 in Lombo do Mouro and follows the Levada da Serra and Levada do Norte. At some points, the path deviates from the levada and follows a stone-paved path.
At the highest point of the route, in the Pináculo area, you have access to a panoramic view over the Ribeira Brava valley with Pico Ruivo and Pico do Areeiro as the background.
Along Caminho do Pináculo e Folhadal, you can also see the 'municipal road,' a section of a public road paved with stones.
From the terrace at Levada do Norte, you can enjoy the tunnels and waterfalls that regularly appear until you reach the Folhadal area.
At the end of Caminho do Pináculo e Folhadal, you also have access to Vereda da Encumeada (PR 1.3), which leads to Pico Ruivo.
