PR18 - Levada do Rei

Levada do Rei is a 5.3-kilometer trail (plus 5.3 kilometers back) where you can explore Madeira's lush nature and reach a unique retreat in the wilderness. The hike takes about 3.5 hours and has a moderate difficulty level.

The route begins at the water treatment plant in São Jorge. Initially, you walk through an exotic forest and past the traditional fields of São Jorge and Santana. Then, you pass through tunnels formed by the area's rich flora, thriving thanks to the abundant water.

The highlight of this hike is reaching Ribeiro Bonito, a secluded retreat with dense Laurissilva forest.

At the end of the route, you can visit the São Jorge water mill, the only operational mill on Madeira. This centuries-old mill, powered by the water from Levada do Rei, grinds local grains under the supervision of an experienced miller.
