Location and Description
The Boca das Voltas campsite is located on the north coast of Madeira Island, specifically in São Jorge at an elevation of about 750 meters. This campsite is in a remote area, nestled in the laurisilva forest. A 4x4 vehicle is required to reach the site, or you can walk for 40 minutes. From this spot, you have a stunning panoramic view over the Boa Ventura valley and the lush green mountains.

Additional Tips
There are no trash bins at the campsite, so you must carry all your waste with you and dispose of it properly elsewhere. This helps keep the environment clean and pristine.

PR18 - Levada do Rei
Levada do Rei is a 5.3-kilometer trail (plus 5.3 kilometers back) where you can explore Madeira's lush nature and reach a unique retreat in the wilderness. The hike takes about 3.5 hours and has a moderate difficulty level.
The route begins at the water treatment plant in São Jorge. Initially, you walk through an exotic forest and past the traditional fields of São Jorge and Santana. Then, you pass through tunnels formed by the area's rich flora, thriving thanks to the abundant water.
The highlight of this hike is reaching Ribeiro Bonito, a secluded retreat with dense Laurissilva forest.
At the end of the route, you can visit the São Jorge water mill, the only operational mill on Madeira. This centuries-old mill, powered by the water from Levada do Rei, grinds local grains under the supervision of an experienced miller.
