A geothermal valley in a hyaloclastite ridge - sometimes referred to as the Little Landmannalaugar or the mini highlands. It's definitely one of my favourite areas in Iceland which is very colourful due to intense high temperature alternation and a few mud pools and solfataras. There are two parking lots near by but to reach the furthest one you need a capable car. When you reach the valley, you can follow the river to get into it or simply hike around the area and enjoy the views. There are also a few lakes in the area (Djúpavatn, Spákonuvatn and Grænavatn) which I'd recommend visiting too!

During summertime it is possible to drive on road Vígdísarvellir (428) on well-equipped cars but it is sometimes closed or inaccessible during winter. During winter time it is possible to walk from road Krýsuvíkurvegur (42).

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: A geothermal valley in the highlands of Reykjanes

  • Best season: Summer for the most colours.

  • Best time of day: Whenever you can but sunset/sunrise makes it super vibrant.

  • Nice to know: You can hike into the valley and all around the area, check out the nearby lakes.
