Grænavatn ("Green Lake") is a lake in the highlands of Reykjanes. As you can see in the main photo, the area is full of interesting features and lakes so you can easily spend a full day out here. To get to it, you turn here off road 41 and drive until you reach this parking spot. If your car is capable, you can drive a little bit further to this parking lot to make the hike a bit shorter. From there you have a few options but I recommend simply having a look at the map and try to make your way around. To get the most out of the area, I recommend seeing Sogin (geothermal area), Djúpavatn and Spákonuvatn (the two other lakes in the area).

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: A unique green lake in the highlands of Reykjanes.

  • Best season: Summer.

  • Best time of day: Any.

  • Nice to know: It is around 2 km (1.2 miles) from the closest parking lot with no clearly marked trails so keep your map close. The green colour is mostly visible from the air.
