I honestly don't know where to begin with this one. This are is such a gem and it's right between the Keflavík airport and the capital. The Reykjanes highlands is a bigger area than this exact one but this part is my favourite and is comprised of a geothermal valley, surrounded by three lakes (Djúpavatn, Spákonuvatn and Grænavatn) and two of my favourite mountains on Reykjanes (Trölladyngja and Grænadyngja). This can easily be a full day so bring water and snacks!

To get there, you take the road to Keilir from Reykjanesbraut (the road that goes from the airport to the capital) and from there you keep going until you reach this parking spot (if you have a capable 4x4 you can drive up the last part of the road to another parking spot.

There are no marked trails so be careful and please respect the nature there and don't make footprints all over the muddy hills. Thank you!

QUICK NOTES:

  • What it is: The hidden highlands in Reykjanes with its lakes, geothermal valley and epic hikes.

  • Best season: Summer (can be hard to reach during winter).

  • Best time of day: Sunrise or sunset but every time is good.

  • Nice to know: The road there isn't great but most car should manage. There are two parking lots in the area and if you have a capable 4x4 you can reach the second one (63°55'55.6"N 22°06'15.6"W). If you can't reach that one, don't worry, just park on the first one (63°56'04.5"N 22°07'14.5"W) and hike up the last part.
