The Calanais Standing Stones are one of Scotland's most remarkable and best-preserved Neolithic monuments. Located west of Stornoway, the ancient cross-shaped arrangement of stones are estimated to be 5,000 years old - predating even England’s famous Stonehenge monument.

It is suspected to have served as an astronomical observatory in their day. For generations the site has been a hotspot for ritual activity, and the visitor centre promises interesting insights into its fascinating history when it reopens in 2025.
