The Calanais Standing Stones are one of Scotland's most remarkable and best-preserved Neolithic monuments. Located west of Stornoway, the ancient cross-shaped arrangement of stones are estimated to be 5,000 years old - predating even England’s famous Stonehenge monument.

It is suspected to have served as an astronomical observatory in their day. For generations the site has been a hotspot for ritual activity, and the visitor centre promises interesting insights into its fascinating history when it reopens in Spring 2026. There are expectations that you will have to have to pay to see the stones up close from this point.
