Carlowrie Castle is a stunning example of Scottish Baronial style architecture located on the outskirts of Kirkliston, a town just ten miles from Edinburgh. The best time to visit is Autumn or summer when the ivy really covers the castle and makes for dramatic photos. Check the timetables and enquire should you wish to see more than the outside.

Some history:

Commissioned by Thomas Hutchison, a prosperous wine merchant in Leith and the Provost of Leith, Carlowrie Castle cost £33,000 to build and was designed by renowned Edinburgh architect David Rhind. It was later passed to Robert's eldest son Thomas Hutchison who was later Lord Provost of Edinburgh. In the twentieth century, the castle was partly used during World War II and was eventually taken over by Isobel Wylie Hutchison, a renowned Arctic explorer and botanist whose independent financial means enabled her extraordinary career.
