Tucked into the saddle between Merapi and Merbabu, Kedung Kayang is one of those waterfalls that's still mostly local-couples-and-Instagrammers rather than tour buses. The roughly 40-meter cascade drops into a forested gorge, but the real draw is the upper viewpoint platform — frame the falls in the foreground and, on a clear morning, Merapi rises directly behind it. It's a short, slightly rough trek down to the base (15–20 min on dirt paths, stone steps and small bridges), so wear proper shoes. We'd treat this as a relaxed half-day, ideally paired with the nearby Ketep Pass viewpoint.

• Entry: ~IDR 10,000–15,000 (cheap; verify on arrival — prices drift)

• Hours: Roughly daylight, ~07:00–17:00 (no firm posted hours — go in the morning regardless)

• Getting there: Wonolelo Village, Sawangan, Magelang Regency. ~40 min from Magelang, ~1.5 hrs from Yogyakarta by car/scooter. Park up top; ojek to the trailhead available (~IDR 30,000 round trip) if you'd rather not walk.

• Best time: Dry season (May–Oct) for the clearest Merapi backdrop; early morning before the mountain clouds over.

Photo tips

• Shoot from the upper platform to line up the falls with Merapi behind — this is the signature frame and only works on a clear morning.

• For the cascade itself, go down to the base and use a tripod + ND filter for silky long exposures; the gorge stays shaded and even.

• Morning light hits the falls from the eastern side — get there early both for the light and to beat the weekend crowds (weekdays you may have it to yourself).
