The world's largest Buddhist temple and Java's headline sight — a 9th-century monument of ~2 million andesite blocks, 504 Buddha statues and over 2,600 relief panels, built as a stone pilgrimage path spiraling up to the bell-shaped stupas at the summit. It's touristy and the ticketing is now genuinely complicated (read below before you go), but standing among the stupas with the Menoreh hills and volcanoes behind it still earns its reputation. Access to the upper structure is capped and requires advance booking. Allow 2–3 hours; the climb ticket includes a mandatory ~1.5-hour guided session.

Practical info

  • Entry (foreigners): Two tiers — Temple Grounds (park/base only) ~IDR 412,500, or Temple Structure (climb up to the stupas, includes guide + mandatory Upanat sandals) ~IDR 455,000. Sunrise access is a separate premium ticket at ~IDR 1,000,000 (limited tickets available so book in advance!). Prices drift with the exchange rate — verify before booking.

  • Climbing is capped & must be pre-booked: ~1,200 climbers/day in hourly slots (8:30 AM–3:30 PM), sold via borobudurpark.com or GetYourGuide. They sell out 1–2 weeks ahead in peak season (Jun–Aug, Dec). No advance slot = no climb. The temple structure typically closes Mondays; the grounds stay open.

  • Hours: Roughly 06:00/06:30–17:00/17:30, last entry ~16:30.

  • Getting there: ~1–1.5 hrs from Yogyakarta, ~40 min from Magelang. Note: the old Borobudur–Prambanan combo ticket was discontinued for foreigners in 2025 — each is now full price separately.

  • Best time: First morning slot (8:30) to beat midday heat, harsh light and crowds — there's zero shade once you're climbing.

Photo tips

  • Shoot from the upper terraces outward to frame stupas in the foreground against Sumbing/Merbabu/Merapi on the horizon — best on a clear morning before haze builds.

  • Nearby Punthuk Setumbu and Setumbu Hill offer the classic distant-sunrise silhouette of Borobudur floating in mist with the volcano behind — a cheaper, very photogenic alternative to the IDR 1M sunrise ticket.

  • Low-angle shots up a single line of stupas with one figure walking the path give scale and that pilgrimage feel; the side light early/late carves out the relief detail far better than flat midday sun.
