Java's tallest waterfall (~200m) and one of Indonesia's highest, hidden at the end of a narrow canyon near Bromo. You don't view this one from afar — you walk into it, wading a shallow river through a slot canyon where water pours down the cliffs on all sides, so you're basically inside a giant circular shower. Misty, mystical, and steeped in legend as the meditation site of Majapahit's Gajah Mada. A perfect lush contrast to Bromo's volcanic sea of sand, and easily bolted onto a Bromo day.
Practical info
Entry: Foreigners ~IDR 50,000 parking ~IDR 5,000–10,000; ojek from car park to trailhead ~IDR 10,000–15,000 each way. The guides here claim it is mandatory to go with a local guide (~IDR 100,000, we doubt they are official and it's mandatory but didn't want trouble either) — clarify fees upfront and ignore aggressive freelance "guides."
Hours: ~08:00–16:00. Closes during heavy rain (landslide/flash-flood risk).
Getting there: Sapih, Lumbang, Probolinggo. ~45–60 min from Cemoro Lawang/Bromo, ~1 hr from Probolinggo. Easiest by private driver or scooter.
Best time: Dry season (May–Oct). Sun penetrates the canyon ~08:30–09:30 for rainbows in the mist.
Photo tips
The signature shot is the canyon "gate" — two cliffs framing the tall column behind; a person in the water shows the 200m scale.
Everything gets soaked, so a proper waterproof housing or rain cover is essential; wipe the lens constantly for the misty look.
Go early for that 08:30–09:30 rainbow window; a wide-angle captures the full circular canyon best.
