Sarkawi Camping Ground (Sumberurip)

A flat grassy meadow with a small stream running through it, set right at the foot of Mount Semeru — when it's clear, Java's highest volcano towers above you, often puffing eruption plumes from the summit. It's become a hit local camping/photo spot (different sub-spots like Kali Kebo and Kali Tayeng), close to Tumpak Sewu and Kapas Biru waterfalls, so it slots neatly into a Pronojiwo loop. The vibe is sunset crowds and sunrise photographers; people usually pitch tents after dusk and pack up soon after sunrise before it gets hot. Come for the volcano backdrop, not facilities — this is raw and basic.

Practical info

• Entry: Day visit/photos often free; camping ~IDR 50,000 per tent (or book a camping package). Verify on arrival — managed informally.

• Hours: Technically 24h; camping activity really starts after dusk.

• Getting there: Sumberurip Village, Pronojiwo, Lumajang Regency, East Java. The access road runs through sand-miner truck tracks and is rough/hidden — a tourist jeep is strongly recommended over self-driving, especially in the wet.

• Best time: Dry season, and specifically dawn — Semeru is usually clearest at sunrise and clouds over by mid-morning. Check volcanic activity status before going.

Photo tips

• The signature shot is a tent in the meadow foreground with Semeru rising behind it at first light — frame low and wide to get the stream leading in.

• Blue hour before sunrise gives you the eruption glow against a deep sky if Semeru is active; a tripod + longer exposure is worth carrying in.

• Telephoto-compress the peak over the camp for a punchier "volcano looming over tiny tents" frame; the plume reads best side-lit just after sunrise.
