Once a run-down riverside slum on the Brantas, Jodipan was repainted in 2016 by local university students working with a paint company — and the whole hillside of houses is now a maze of candy-colored walls, murals and 3D art. It's pure photo bait, but the community angle is real: your ticket and any snacks you buy go straight to residents. Plan 45 min to an hour to wander the stairways and alleys. The signature spot is the Jembatan Kaca Ngalam, a glass bridge linking Jodipan to the neighboring Kampung Tridi (3D village). It's central, easy, and a fun contrast to the surrounding nature stops.

• Entry: ~IDR 5,000 per person (cheap; small extra fee if you cross into Kampung Tridi via the bridge — verify on arrival)

• Hours: Daily ~07:00–17:00

• Getting there: Jl. Ir. H. Juanda, Blimbing, Malang. Walking distance / a few minutes by Grab from Malang Kota Baru station and the city center. Parking ~IDR 2,000 (bike) / 5,000 (car).

• Best time: Early morning for soft light and empty alleys, or late afternoon into blue hour. Midday is harsh and crowded — bring a hat if you go then.

Photo tips

• The umbrella alley (lorong payung) with the floating colored umbrellas overhead is the classic frame — shoot upward to catch the canopy against the sky.

• From the glass bridge, shoot back toward the painted houses tumbling down to the river for the full rainbow-hillside spread.

• Side light early or late makes the colors pop; midday sun flattens them and blows out the brighter walls. A person in a plain/neutral outfit stands out beautifully against the busy backgrounds.
