Directions

After sunrise, the second act: descend into the caldera, cross the surreal grey "Sea of Sand" (Lautan Pasir), pass the Hindu Pura Luhur Poten temple, and climb ~240–250 steps to the crater rim of the active, smoking volcano. From the narrow ledge you look straight down into the vent, sulfur fumes rising and the ground occasionally rumbling. The walk plus climb takes about an hour round trip — moderate, doable for most, but the rim railing is minimal, so mind your footing and the wind.

Practical info

  • Entry: Covered by the Bromo NP ticket (~IDR 220,000 weekdays / 320,000 weekends). Crossing the sand sea is by 4x4 jeep or on foot (~15–30 min from drop-off). Horses to the stair base ~IDR 200,000+ (welfare concerns — many travelers skip them).

  • Hours: Usually visited right after sunrise. Check closures: Bromo shuts for ceremonies (Nyepi, Kasada, Kapitu) and can close on volcanic activity — verify on Magma Indonesia.

  • Getting there: Caldera floor below Cemoro Lawang. Jeep tours handle this; you can also walk from Cemoro Lawang.

  • Best time: Dry season, early — before dust, heat and crowds build.

Photo tips

  • Attetion (!): for flying a drone around the Bromo crater rim you as of now officially need a license that costs a whopping 2mio IDR. However I saw multiple people fly and nobody enforced any fines but keep that in mind!

  • Shoot the tiny line of people crossing the vast sea of sand toward Bromo — that scale contrast is the signature frame.

  • Pura Luhur Poten standing alone on the ash plain with Batok behind makes a strong foreground; go wide.

  • Bring a mask/buff and lens protection — blowing volcanic dust is rough on gear. Note: drones are not permitted at the crater rim or viewpoints (safety + crowds), separate from the paid NP drone permit.
