Juneau, the capital of Alaska, is a unique city nestled along the Gastineau Channel and the Alaskan panhandle. Named after gold prospector Joe Juneau, it was once called Rockwell and Harrisburg. With a population of around 32,000, Juneau is the third-most populous city in Alaska. What sets Juneau apart from other state capitals is its lack of road connections to the rest of the state or contiguous United States, making it a de facto island city in terms of transportation. Despite its rugged terrain and isolation, Juneau boasts stunning natural beauty, including the nearby Mendenhall Glacier and the Juneau Icefield. The city is home to the Alaska State Capitol and serves as the political hub of the state.
