Strathcona Provincial Park is Vancouver Island’s oldest and largest protected wilderness — a rugged alpine playground filled with glacier-fed lakes, towering peaks, thundering waterfalls, and some of the best hiking in British Columbia. Whether you’re here for a mellow lakeside paddle, a multi-day backcountry adventure, or a campground base to explore from, Strathcona feels wild, raw, and unforgettable.

Camping in Strathcona

Buttle Lake Campground - Reservation needed 

  • Access: Paved

  • Amenities: Vehicle sites, lakefront spots, flush toilets, showers, picnic areas

  • Why stay: Launch your paddleboard right from camp, close to most major hikes and waterfalls.

Ralph River Campground - Reservation needed

  • Access: Gravel (RV-friendly)

  • Amenities: Vehicle sites, pit toilets, riverside setting

  • Why stay: Quieter, more forested, close to the southern Buttle Lake attractions.

Backcountry Camping

  • Forbidden Plateau: Numerous wilderness pads along the Plateau’s lakes

  • Bedwell Lake/Tenant Lake Route: Tent pads at Bedwell & Baby Bedwell

  • Elk River Trail: Backcountry pads at Butterwort Creek and Elk River

  • Della Falls Trail: Wilderness sites along Drinkwater Creek

Easy

Lower Myra Falls

  • Distance: 1 km return

  • Time: 20–30 min

  • Notes: Short forested path to turquoise cascades pouring into Buttle Lake.

Upper Myra Falls

  • Distance: 7 km return

  • Time: 2.5–3 hrs

  • Notes: Classic waterfall trail; great payoff.

Karst Creek Trail

  • Distance: 2 km loop

  • Time: 45–60 min

  • Notes: Underrated geology trail with sinkholes and springs.

Lady Falls

  • Distance: 1.2 km return

  • Time: 20–30 min

  • Notes: Towering waterfall blasting through a narrow gorge.

Moderate

Elk River Trail to Landslide Lake (Day Hike Option)

  • Distance: 22 km return

  • Time: 8–10 hrs

  • Notes: A long push, but one of the most rewarding turquoise alpine lakes in the park.

Lupin Falls Loop

  • Distance: 1 km

  • Time: 20 min

  • Notes: Quick, family-friendly loop to a shady falls.

Bedwell Lake Trail -

  • Distance: 12 km return

  • Time: 5–6 hrs

  • Notes: Boardwalks, lakes, and alpine bowl views. One of the best moderate hikes in the park.

Challenging / Hard - Permit required

King’s Peak

  • Distance: 10 km return

  • Time: 6–10 hrs

  • Notes: Steep, scrambly, iconic summit with big alpine exposure.

Mt. Albert Edward (from Raven Lodge)

  • Distance: 32 km return

  • Time: 10–14 hrs (or overnight)

  • Notes: A Vancouver Island classic. Alpine ridges, endless views. Challenging but non-technical.

Flower Ridge Trail

  • Distance: 14 km return

  • Time: 7–9 hrs

  • Notes: Huge ridge views once you break out of the trees. Phenomenal on a clear day.

Phillips Ridge

  • Distance: ~16 km return

  • Time: 7–9 hrs

  • Notes: Similar to Flower Ridge with big panoramas and rugged terrain.

Della Falls Trail (Multi-Day)

  • Distance: 32 km return

  • Time: 3 days

  • Notes: One of Canada’s tallest waterfalls — reached via a boat shuttle across Great Central Lake + a long forested trek.

Forbidden Plateau (Multiple Routes)

Paradise Meadows Loop

  • Distance: 4–5 km

  • Time: 1–1.5 hrs

  • Notes: Beginner-friendly boardwalks through alpine meadows.

Lake Helen Mackenzie Loop

  • Distance: 8.5 km

  • Time: 3–4 hrs

  • Notes: Gorgeous plateau hiking past lakes and open meadows.

Helen Mackenzie → Battleship Lake Loop

  • Distance: 7–8 km

  • Time: 2.5–3.5 hrs

Buttle Lake

Jim Mitchell Lake

  • Quiet, sheltered

  • Great wildlife viewing

Crest Creek / Upper Campbell Lake (outside park but nearby)
