Kairouan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its historical significance and architectural beauty. This is a city we decided on visiting pretty last minute, and we are absolutely glad we did. This city is one of the most holy and spiritual capitals of Islam, so you’ll meet many who make a pilgrimage to this beautiful city. Of course, seeing as it’s an Islamic capital, the Great Mosque is a must-visit. But on top of seeing the mosque, you should spend an hour or so walking around the medina and eating their signature kafteji, one of our favorite street foods in Tunisia. This is a great day trip from Tunis or a perfect stopover while driving down to Tozeur from Tunis (which is what we did).
